Navigating the First 12 Weeks: A Practical Checklist for Pregnancy

The first trimester (weeks 1–12) is a whirlwind of changes—both in your body and your daily life. Between appointments, lifestyle shifts, and learning what to expect, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. To simplify things, here’s a first trimester checklist from our team at The Pregnancy Bar:

Schedule Your First Prenatal Appointment

Call your provider as soon as you confirm your pregnancy.

  • Most first visits happen between weeks 8–10.

  • Expect a review of your medical history, blood work, and possibly an early ultrasound.

  • Bring your list of medications and any questions.

Start Prenatal Vitamins

If you haven’t already, choose a prenatal with folic acid, iron, and vitamin D.

  • Begin as early as possible—even before conception if you can.

Complete Initial Lab Work and Screenings

Your provider may order:

  • Blood type and Rh factor

  • Complete blood count (including iron levels)

  • Immunity testing for rubella and varicella

  • Optional genetic screening (discuss if it’s right for you)

Review Your Medications

Not all prescriptions or over-the-counter medications are safe during pregnancy. Always check with your provider before continuing or starting anything new.

Focus on Nutrition & Hydration

  • Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains.

  • Avoid high-risk foods (like raw fish, deli meats, and unpasteurized cheeses).

  • Stay hydrated—your body needs more water during pregnancy.

Prioritize Rest & Self-Care

Fatigue is common in the first trimester. Support your body with rest whenever possible. Small practices—like short naps, gentle stretching, and asking for help—can make a big difference.

Plan Your Support System

Pregnancy is physical and emotional. Begin identifying who will support you through appointments, decisions, and daily life—whether that’s your partner, family, friends, or a doula.

Your first trimester is about laying a foundation—for your baby and for yourself. With the right appointments, care, and self-nourishment, you’ll step into the months ahead feeling informed, supported, and prepared.
